Democratic congressional candidate Steve Woodsmall (NC-11) and NCDP African American Caucus President Linda Wilkins-Daniels released the following statement regarding Rep. Mark Meadows’ failure to defend Rep. Elijah Cummings from President Trump’s racist attacks, despite Rep. Cummings defending Meadows earlier this year:

“Once again, Mark Meadows’ silence constitutes acceptance. His failure to clearly and concisely speak out against Trump’s racist remarks toward Rep. Cummings calls into question his priorities. When he finally released a statement, days after the incident and delivered secondhand, his weakly issued comments did not directly criticize Trump. This week, Meadows failed again to take a moral stance.

Cherokee Guns, a gun store in Murphy, N.C., put up a billboard targeting four minority female members of the US Congress (Pressley, Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, and Tlaib) referring to the progressive freshmen as idiots and the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” On Wednesday, Pressley (D-Mass) told Meadows, “Cherokee Guns is in your district, and you and I serve on a committee together. Here’s your chance to finally do the right thing.”

Meadows repeatedly failed to respond to neither Donald Trump’s recurring vitriolic rhetoric nor recent racially charged incidents. Furthermore, Meadows never provided a proper explanation for using an African American female as a prop during a Michael Cohen congressional hearing. Such behavior calls into question his judgment and suitability to adequately represent the values of Western North Carolina voters.”
